Benefits of the Drill

Develop variations of the backhand

Make backhands a routine tool to make routine plays

Learn to travel and approach the ball on the backhand side

Learn to field backhands with carefully placed feet

Confidence with these skill sets

Common Miscues

Glove extends but chest does not

Glove is presented like a wall and not with fingers flexed back

Feet are not positioned correctly on the approach

Not presenting the glove soon enough

Player misses the ball or bobbles it and picks it up with their glove instead of their bare hand

Elbow is locked in a straight position

Identify the Standout

The chest hovers over the ball

Fingers are flexed back with the elbow bent facing the route of the ball

Foot placement on the backhand is confident and intentional

Weight is placed on the back leg and then transferred to the front as the player works through the ball

Small half circle going forward and then brings the glove back to the bare hand to transfer

Eyes and head stay still and down to the ball
